LABOUR HISTORY

The workshop will provide you with an introduction to Canadian labour and working-class history covering 100 years from the late 1800s to 2000. Using video recordings on various aspects of working-class and labour histroy, and group discussions, the workshop will explore the major themes in the development of the Canadian labour movement.

 

CHEMICAL SENSITIVITIES IN THE WORKPLACE

Increasingly, workers are becoming sensitized to chemicals in their environment. This session will deal with the issue of multiple chemical sensitivity (environmental illness) and its diverse symptoms and effects. Discussion will address identifying and assessing worker exposure to hazardous chemicals in the workplace and solutions to eliminate or control that exposure.

 

POLITICAL ACTION

From letter to the editor to election campaigns, to civil disobedience, this one day workshop will explore the tools you need to get labour issues on the political agenda.

 

MEDIA RELATIONS

Effective communications necessitates the understanding and well organized use of media. From the News Release, press conference and inteview, getting your message out has never been more important. Learn the tools and media outlets that will make your communications work for you.

 

INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY

The global economy forces demands on the labour movement that have never been seen in our history. Understanding and gaining an appreciation for the international labour movement will ensure the struggle and survival of all free workers. Explore your place as a labour activist within the global economy.

 

FACING MANAGEMENT

The art of negotiating goes far beyond the collective agreement. Daily dealings with management often put the shop steward in compromising positions. Learn the art of facing down management while maintaining your compousre from a position of strength.
